Round Yoga Bolster Pillow – Firm Support Cushion for Restorative Yoga

$48.99

A firm round bolster pillow for restorative and yin yoga, used to support the spine, hips and knees so a shape can be held for minutes rather than breaths. Firmness is the whole point — a soft cushion collapses under bodyweight and stops supporting you halfway through the hold. Also useful under the knees for lower back relief while lying down.

The Prop That Lets Your Nervous System Actually Let Go

Restorative and yin yoga are not stretching. They rely on holding a shape for minutes at a time with near-zero muscular effort, so the nervous system shifts toward a parasympathetic state and connective tissue is loaded gently over a long duration. That only happens if the body is completely propped. Any part of you still working to hold the shape keeps the muscle switched on, and the effect never arrives. A firm cylindrical bolster fills the gap between your body and the floor – under the knees, the spine, or the chest – so that gravity does the holding instead of you.

Key Benefits

  • Firmness is the feature, not a compromise – a bolster that collapses under your weight puts you back on the floor and you start bracing all over again. Density is precisely what lets you stop working.
  • The cylindrical shape opens the chest – laid lengthways under the spine in a supported backbend, a round bolster arches the thoracic spine and lets the front of the shoulders and the ribcage open. It is the direct antidote to a day at a desk.
  • Under the knees, it saves your lower back – in savasana, a bolster under the knees releases the psoas and settles the lumbar spine toward the floor. This is the single most useful thing most people will do with it.
  • It makes long holds survivable – a five-minute supported pose is only restful if nothing aches. Propping is the difference between resting and enduring.
  • Also a legitimate meditation seat – sat astride, it lifts the hips and produces the same pelvic tilt a zafu does.
  • Genuinely useful in pregnancy and recovery – supported side-lying with a bolster between the knees is comfortable when very little else is.

How to Use

Under the knees for savasana. Lengthways under the spine, tailbone on the floor and the bolster running up your back, for a supported reclining backbend – let the head reach the floor, or prop it with a folded blanket if the neck feels strained. Across the thighs and under the chest for supported child’s pose, so the belly and forehead rest and the back can widen. Between the knees for side-lying. Under the hips or forehead for supported forward folds. Aim for three to eight minutes per shape, and use a blanket, because the body cools quickly once it stops working. Safety: build the shape so that nothing pulls. A restorative pose should feel like almost nothing, and if you feel a real stretch you are probably being too aggressive with the prop. Come out of supported backbends slowly and roll to your side first, since standing up quickly from a passive backbend is a reliable way to feel dizzy. In pregnancy, avoid long flat-on-your-back positions after the first trimester and use side-lying instead.

Care & Maintenance

If the cover is removable, machine wash it on a cool, gentle cycle – but check the label before assuming that it is. Do not machine wash or soak the inner bolster itself: the filling will clump, dry unevenly and never regain its shape or firmness, and firmness is the only reason you bought it. Spot clean the inner with a damp cloth and let it air dry fully. Fluff and rotate it periodically so it compresses evenly rather than developing a permanent dent where your spine goes. Keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight, which fades fabric and degrades filling.

Common questions

Where should a lumbar cushion sit?
At belt height, in the natural inward curve of the lower back. Set higher, it pushes the shoulders forward and creates the slouch it is meant to prevent.
How long does it take to get used to a contoured pillow?
About a week. Most people who abandon a cervical or contoured pillow do so in the first three nights, before their neck has adapted to the new position.
Does a wedge pillow help acid reflux?
Raising the upper body helps when the incline starts at the waist. Propping only the head bends the stomach and can make reflux worse.
