Strength & Training

Strength equipment for home training comes down to three ways of loading a muscle: elastic tension, free weight, or your own bodyweight against a grip. This collection holds 130 resistance bands, dumbbells, grip trainers, core devices and jump ropes — the kit that turns a corner of a room into a functional gym without a rack.

Resistance bands are the highest value per dollar and per square foot in home training. A set of five loop bands costs less than one dumbbell and covers most of a full-body programme.

How to build a home gym on a budget

Buy in this order: resistance bands, then a pair of adjustable dumbbells, then a pull-up bar or suspension trainer, then anything else. That sequence gives you the widest exercise coverage for the least money and floor space, and each stage still gets used after you add the next.

Choosing resistance band strength

  • Extra light / yellow — shoulder rehab, warm-ups, pull-aparts.
  • Light / red — upper body isolation, banded mobility.
  • Medium / green — the everyday band for rows and presses.
  • Heavy / blue — glute and leg work, assisted pull-ups.
  • Extra heavy / black — heavy assisted pull-ups, hip thrust work.

Buy a set rather than a single band. Progression in band training comes from changing band or changing the length you pull, and you need the range to do either.

Grip strength: why it is worth training

Grip is the first thing to fail in rows, deadlifts and carries, so it caps how much the rest of your body can train. Ten minutes a week of dedicated grip work — hand grippers, extensors, a towel hang — usually removes that ceiling within a month.

Frequently asked questions

Can you build muscle with resistance bands alone?

Yes, up to a point. Bands produce real mechanical tension, and tension is what drives hypertrophy. The limit is loading the largest muscles — legs and back — where the strongest bands eventually stop being challenging. Most people reach that point after several months, not weeks.

Adjustable or fixed dumbbells?

Adjustable if you have less than a square metre to spare or are training alone at home, since one pair replaces a rack. Fixed if you train fast, change weight between sets often, or share the equipment.

How heavy should my first dumbbells be?

Pick a weight you can press overhead for 10 clean reps with 2 left in the tank. For most beginners that is 10–20lb per hand for upper body. If you buy adjustables, the useful range for a first set is roughly 5–50lb per hand.

Do resistance bands snap?

Latex bands degrade with UV light, heat and abrasion. Store them out of sunlight, keep them off rough concrete, and replace any band with visible nicks, cracks or cloudy patches. Never stretch a band toward your face.

How long should a jump rope be?

Stand on the middle of the rope; the handles should reach roughly to your armpits. Most adults land between 9ft and 10ft. Adjustable ropes are worth it if more than one person uses them.
