Löyly: The Pour That Turns Heat Into a Sauna
Water thrown onto hot stones flashes instantly to steam — the Finnish call it löyly — and that steam raises humidity in the cabin. This matters physiologically. In dry air your sweat evaporates almost as fast as it forms, so your skin stays comparatively cool. Raise the humidity and evaporation slows, so heat transfers into your body more efficiently and the perceived heat rises sharply even though the thermometer barely moves. That’s why a sauna feels transformed by a single ladle of water. Regular sauna bathing is associated in observational research with cardiovascular benefits and improved recovery from exercise, likely via heat-driven vasodilation, increased circulation and parasympathetic rebound afterwards. Red cedar is the traditional material because it resists moisture and rot, holds a low thermal conductivity so the handle stays touchable, and doesn’t warp in a wet-dry cycle that would destroy most woods.
Key Benefits
- Red cedar handles the wet-dry cycle: the natural oils in cedar resist rot and mould in exactly the punishing conditions — soaked, then baked, twice a day — that split and warp ordinary timber.
- Low thermal conductivity means a handle you can hold: cedar stays cool to the touch in a hot cabin far better than metal or dense hardwood. This is a practical safety feature, not a luxury.
- 4 litres is the sweet spot: enough for a full session of pours without being so heavy that it’s awkward on a high bench.
- Long-handled ladle keeps your hand out of the steam: the burst off the stones is violently hot. Handle length is the difference between a good pour and a scalded wrist.
- Löyly is the actual point: the humidity spike from the pour is what raises perceived heat and drives the sweat response. Without a bucket, you’re not controlling the one variable that matters most.
- What it is, plainly: a beautifully made wooden bucket and ladle. It does not ‘detoxify’ you — that’s your liver and kidneys, and no amount of sweating changes that. It makes your sauna work properly, which is a better and more honest claim.
How to Use
Fill the bucket with clean, cool water before your session and let it sit inside the sauna so the wood stays damp — cedar that dries out completely between uses will shrink and start to leak, and this is the single most common cause of a ‘faulty’ sauna bucket. Ladle water slowly onto the hot stones, a little at a time, and pause between pours; the humidity climbs fast and it climbs cumulatively. Stand back as you pour, keep your face and forearms out of the plume, and never pour water directly onto electric heating elements or the heater body — stones only. Do not add essential oils directly to the stones, where they can scorch or ignite; dilute a few drops in the bucket water instead, and only if your heater manufacturer permits it. General sauna safety: hydrate before and after, limit sessions to what feels comfortable, get out if you feel dizzy or nauseated, never use a sauna after drinking alcohol, and check with a doctor first if you are pregnant or have a heart condition or low blood pressure.

Care & Maintenance
Empty the bucket after every session but do not let the wood bake bone-dry in a hot cabin — that shrinkage opens the joints and causes leaks. Rinse with clean water and wipe down; avoid detergents and never put cedar in a dishwasher. If the bucket does dry out and weep, soak it in cool water for several hours and the wood will swell and re-seal itself. Store somewhere with a little ambient humidity rather than in direct heat, and periodically check the hoops or bands for tightness.
