Extra Thick 1/2-Inch Yoga Mat – Odourless, Non-Slip & Foldable for Travel

$146.99

A half-inch thick yoga mat gives extra joint padding for knees, wrists and spine during floor work. It measures roughly 183 x 61 cm in odourless NBR foam with a textured non-slip surface and folds or rolls for travel. The extra thickness cushions well but makes balance poses less stable — choose 6 mm if you do a lot of standing work.

The Cushioning Your Knees Have Been Asking For

Pressure is force divided by area. On a thin 4mm mat, your kneecap, elbow or spine presses a small bony contact patch into a hard floor, and the discomfort arrives long before the muscle actually fatigues. A 1/2-inch closed-cell foam deck compresses under those bony points and spreads the load across a wider area, which raises your time-to-discomfort. The practical effect is not comfort for its own sake: it is that you stop bracing against the floor and can actually breathe into a stretch, hold a plank to real failure, or kneel through a full mobility flow.

Key Benefits

  • Genuinely thick, not marketing-thick. At roughly 12mm, this sits in the cushioning class used for kneeling, supine and rehab work — not the 4-6mm class built for standing grip.
  • Textured non-slip surface on both sides. The grip comes from surface texture rather than tackiness, so it keeps working when the mat is dusty or your hands are damp.
  • Folds instead of rolls. A folding mat packs flat into a case, a car boot or a bag, and it lies down without curling at the corners the way a rolled mat does for its first month.
  • Low-odour foam. Cheap foam mats off-gas a strong solvent smell that lingers for weeks. This one is formulated to minimise it — expect a faint new-foam scent on unboxing, gone after a day of airing.
  • Doubles as a camping and sleeping pad. Half an inch of closed-cell foam is a legitimate insulating layer between a sleeping bag and cold ground, which is a real second use rather than a listing embellishment.
  • An honest trade-off, stated up front. Thick foam is less stable in standing balance poses — it gives under a single foot. That is physics, not a defect, and every extra-thick mat shares it.

How to Use

Unfold the mat and give it a few hours to decompress; folding creases relax on their own. Wipe the surface once before first use — new foam can carry a slightly slick manufacturing residue that reduces grip until it is removed. For floor work, kneeling sequences, core training and stretching, use it as-is. For standing balance poses such as tree, warrior III or single-leg deadlifts, the extra give works against you: your ankle stabilisers get a moving target instead of a solid one. Either step onto a firmer surface for those, or fold the mat in half and stand on the doubled section. Keep it out of direct sunlight, which degrades foam and makes it brittle over time.

Care & Maintenance

Wipe down after use with a damp cloth and a drop of mild soap; skip alcohol sprays and harsh solvents, which dry out foam and crack the surface texture. Let it dry fully flat before folding — trapped moisture between folded faces is how mats develop odour. Store folded or flat, out of direct sunlight and away from radiators. Do not machine wash and do not tumble dry.

Common questions

What thickness yoga mat should I choose?
Four to six millimetres is the usual compromise: stable enough for standing balance, padded enough for most floor work. Eight millimetres and above is kinder to the knees but noticeably less stable in balance poses.
How do I stop a yoga mat from slipping?
New mats often have a manufacturing film on them. Wash it with mild soap and water, let it dry fully, and use it a few times. Cork and natural rubber grip better as your hands get damp; PVC grips better when dry.
How do you clean a yoga mat?
Wipe it with diluted mild soap or a vinegar and water solution, then air dry flat or hanging. Do not put it in a washing machine or leave it in direct sun, which degrades the surface.
