It Trains a Muscle. It Does Not Melt Fat — Here Is the Difference
Resisted chewing loads the masseter and temporalis, the two muscles that close your jaw. Like any skeletal muscle, they grow with progressive overload, and a larger masseter sits directly over the angle of the mandible, which can make the lower face look squarer and more defined. That is the entire mechanism, and it is a real one. What it cannot do is affect the fat sitting on top of it. Contracting a muscle does not preferentially burn the fat above it — spot reduction has been tested repeatedly and does not happen. Submental fat responds to overall body composition, not to chewing.
Key Benefits
- It genuinely hypertrophies the masseter. Progressive resistance grows the jaw-closing muscles the same way it grows any other muscle. Over months, that added muscle bulk at the mandibular angle is a visible change.
- It will not reduce a double chin, and any product claiming otherwise is lying to you. Submental fat sits above the muscle you are training. Spot reduction is not a real physiological process. Chin fat changes when overall body fat changes — through diet and overall energy balance, not through chewing.
- It does not tighten skin either. Skin laxity is a matter of collagen, elastin and age. No amount of muscle work underneath addresses it.
- A wider jaw is a change, not automatically an improvement. Masseter hypertrophy squares the lower face. Some people want exactly that; others pay for Botox to shrink the same muscle. Be sure which camp you are in before you commit to months of training.
- It may help with jaw and chewing strength. There is a legitimate case for masseter training in the context of chewing function, though the evidence is thin and this is not a therapeutic device.
- Cheap, honest and low-risk if used sensibly. A piece of moulded silicone with graded resistance. Used in moderation, the downside is small — but see the warnings below, because they are not decorative.
How to Use
Start with the softest resistance level and the shortest session you can imagine — five minutes, once a day, is plenty for the first fortnight. Position the piece between your back molars, not your front teeth, and bite in a slow, controlled rhythm rather than clenching hard and holding. Build up gradually over weeks, exactly as you would with any resistance training, and give the muscle rest days. SAFETY — this matters more than the marketing implies. The temporomandibular joint is a small, heavily used joint and it is easy to aggravate. Stop immediately and see a dentist or doctor if you get jaw pain, clicking, popping, locking, headaches or earache. Do not use this at all if you already have TMJ dysfunction, bruxism, jaw pain, dental work such as crowns, veneers or braces, or if you are a child whose jaw is still developing. Over-training the masseter can worsen clenching and grinding rather than relieve it. If you are using this hoping to fix a double chin, save your money — that is not what it does.

Care & Maintenance
Wash thoroughly with warm soapy water before first use and after every session — this goes in your mouth, so treat it like a mouthguard rather than a gym accessory. It can be sterilised in boiling water for a few minutes, which is worth doing weekly. Air dry completely before storing in a ventilated case; sealing damp silicone in an airtight container is how it grows a biofilm. Inspect it before each use and bin it immediately if you find any tear, split or piece missing, since a fragment breaking off between the molars is a choking risk.
