A Racing Cap Buys You Drag, Not Dry Hair
At swimming speeds, most of what slows you down is form drag — water having to separate around your body and rejoin behind it. Loose hair is a mess of tiny turbulent wakes right at the leading surface, so it costs you more than its size suggests. A smooth silicone shell flattens all of that into one continuous, low-friction surface and lets flow stay attached over the crown of your head. That’s the entire mechanism. Note what it is not: no swim cap seals the skull, so this will not keep your hair dry, and any product claiming otherwise is overselling.
Key Benefits
- Smoothes the leading surface — flattening hair into a single silicone plane reduces turbulence at the front of your stroke, which is where drag reduction is worth the most.
- Silicone over latex — thicker, more durable, easier to pull on without tearing, and latex-free for anyone with a latex sensitivity.
- Stays put on turns and dives — a snug silicone grip is far less likely to peel off at the wall than a loose fabric cap.
- Reduces chlorine contact with hair — it doesn’t seal, but less exposure means less of the drying and colour-stripping chlorine does to hair over a season.
- Keeps hair out of goggle seals — a stray strand under a goggle skirt is the most common cause of a leak mid-race.
- Honest about what it can’t do — it will not keep your hair dry, and it will not make you faster on its own. It removes a small drag penalty; the rest is you.
How to Use
Wet your hair and the inside of the cap first — a dry silicone cap grabs hair and rips it out. Hold the cap open with both hands, thumbs inside, and roll it back from your forehead to the nape of your neck rather than dragging it over the crown. Long hair goes into a low bun or flat plait at the back before the cap goes on; a high bun creates a bulge that both spoils the smooth surface and pushes the cap off. Tuck the front edge just above the eyebrows so your goggle strap can sit over the cap. Never pull the cap on by the crown — that’s what splits it. Wearing two caps (silicone over a fabric one) is a standard trick for a firmer, smoother fit in competition.

Care & Maintenance
Rinse in fresh water after every swim, inside and out — chlorine left on silicone degrades it and makes it brittle and prone to splitting. Pat dry, then dust the inside lightly with talc if you swim daily; this stops the silicone sticking to itself in storage. Dry away from direct sunlight and heat, and never leave it balled up in a wet kit bag, which is how most caps die.
