Deep Pressure That Doesn’t Leave You Sweating at 2am
Weighted blankets work through deep pressure stimulation — broad, even, gentle pressure across the body, the same input as a firm hug or a swaddle. That pressure is thought to shift autonomic balance toward the parasympathetic “rest and digest” state, lowering physiological arousal and making it easier to settle. The problem is that most weighted blankets are dense polyester that traps heat, and a rising skin temperature works directly against sleep onset, which depends on your core temperature dropping. Bamboo viscose is the answer: it is highly breathable, moisture-wicking, and feels cool to the touch, so you get the pressure without the greenhouse.
Key Benefits
- Deep pressure stimulation. Even weight distributed across the body reduces physiological arousal — the mechanism weighted blankets are actually built on, and the reason they help some people settle.
- Built specifically for hot sleepers. 100% bamboo viscose is breathable and cool to the touch, addressing the single biggest reason weighted blankets end up in a cupboard.
- Moisture-wicking. Viscose moves sweat away from the skin instead of holding it against you, which matters most in the hours after a hard training day.
- Even weight, no pooling. Quilted pocket construction keeps the fill from migrating to one corner — a blanket with all the weight at your feet is a blanket that does nothing.
- Naturally soft, no chemical hand-feel. Bamboo viscose drapes closely, which is what lets the weight follow your body contour rather than tenting over it.
- Realistic about the evidence. Weighted blankets are well-liked and some studies support improved subjective sleep and reduced anxiety, but they are not a treatment for insomnia or an anxiety disorder. They are a comfort tool, and a good one.
How to Use
Choose a weight in the region of 10% of your body weight — heavier is not better, and a blanket you cannot easily push off is a blanket you will fight all night. Lay it over yourself from shoulders to feet, letting it drape rather than tucking it in tightly; the pressure should feel like an even hug, not a restraint. Use it on top of your normal sheet, and if you sleep hot, skip the duvet entirely rather than layering. Give it a couple of weeks — the sensation is unusual at first. Safety matters here: never use a weighted blanket for babies, toddlers or young children, and never for anyone who cannot independently and easily remove it themselves. Do not use one if you have sleep apnoea, a respiratory or circulatory condition, low blood pressure, claustrophobia, or restricted mobility, without first speaking to your doctor. Never cover the head or face.

Care & Maintenance
Check the label for your variant: many bamboo weighted blankets are machine washable cold on a gentle cycle, but a heavy blanket can overload a domestic drum, so use a large-capacity machine or a launderette. Wash it alone, use mild detergent, and skip fabric softener and bleach — both damage viscose fibres. Tumble dry low or, better, dry flat; wet weighted fill is heavy enough to tear seams if you hang it. Using a duvet cover over it cuts how often you need to wash the blanket itself, which is the single best thing you can do for its lifespan.
