Question 1

Do massage tools actually help muscle recovery?

Accepted Answer

They reliably reduce the sensation of muscle soreness and improve short-term range of motion. Claims that they flush lactic acid or speed tissue repair are not supported — lactic acid clears on its own within an hour of exercise. Buy them because they make you feel and move better the next day, which is a real benefit.

Question 2

Is it normal for foam rolling to hurt?

Accepted Answer

Mild discomfort in a tight muscle is normal. Sharp pain, numbness, or pain over a bone or joint is not — move off that spot. Never roll directly over the lower back, the front of the neck, or an area that is bruised, swollen or recently injured.

Question 3

Can I use a massage gun every day?

Accepted Answer

Yes, within limits. Two minutes per muscle group, on muscle only, avoiding the spine, joints, kidneys and the front of the neck. If an area is still sore from the gun the next day, you used too much pressure for too long.

Question 4

Should I use heat or ice?

Accepted Answer

Ice for a fresh injury with swelling, in the first 48 hours. Heat for stiffness, chronic tightness and warming up before activity. For general post-training soreness with no swelling, heat is usually more comfortable and just as effective. See our hot and cold therapy collection.

Question 5

What is the best recovery tool for beginners?

Accepted Answer

A medium-density foam roller and one massage ball, for under $35 together. That pair covers most of what most people need. Add a massage gun later if you find you are short on time rather than short on options.
