Dumbbells & Free Weights

Free weights load a muscle with constant resistance through the whole movement, which is why they remain the reference standard for building strength. For home training the decision is nearly always adjustable versus fixed — one pair of adjustables replaces a rack and a square metre of floor.

This collection holds 27 dumbbells, kettlebells, weight vests and wearable weights.

Floor space One pair A rack
Cost per lb Lower overall Higher overall
Changing weight 5–15 seconds Instant

Frequently asked questions

What weight dumbbells should a beginner buy?

Choose a weight you can press overhead for 10 clean reps with two left in reserve — for most beginners that is 10–20lb per hand. If buying adjustables, a 5–50lb per hand range covers years of progress.

Are weight vests useful?

For walking, bodyweight training and step work, yes — they add load without adding equipment. Start at around 5% of bodyweight and make sure the vest sits high and tight so it does not swing.

Kettlebell or dumbbell first?

Dumbbells, for most people. They cover more exercises with less technique. Add a kettlebell when you want swings, cleans and carries.
