Kids Boxing Gloves – Padded Junior Training Mitts for Pad & Bag Work

Price range: $41.75 through $42.30

Kids boxing gloves are scaled-down padded mitts for junior training on pads and light bags. They use soft layered foam under a durable synthetic shell with a hook-and-loop wrist strap. Size by age and weight rather than hand length, and pair them with junior wraps — small hands need the wrist support most.

Protect Small Hands Before You Teach the Punch

A child’s hand contains twenty-seven bones and, crucially, open growth plates — cartilage zones that are weaker than the bone around them and that take impact badly. When a fist hits a hard surface, the force travels straight down the metacarpals, and if the wrist is not held straight it hyperextends at the moment of impact. That is where beginners actually get hurt: not knuckles, but wrists. A padded glove works by extending the duration of the impact, so the same momentum is delivered as a lower peak force, and by spreading that force across a wider area of the hand. The wrapped wrist cuff does the other half of the job, splinting the wrist so it cannot fold backwards when the punch lands off-centre — which, with a beginner, it usually does.

Key Benefits

  • Impact spread over time and area. Padding lengthens the collision, lowering peak force on developing metacarpals and knuckles.
  • Wrist cuff that resists hyperextension. The most common beginner injury is a bent wrist on a mistimed punch — the cuff is doing more work here than the knuckle padding.
  • Sized for children’s hands. An adult glove on a child’s hand slides, rotates on impact and offers almost no wrist support, which is worse than no glove at all.
  • Encourages good technique from the start. A child who is not afraid of hurting their hand keeps a proper fist and a straight wrist, instead of flinching at contact.
  • Great for coordination and cardio. Pad work is genuinely excellent for timing, footwork, rhythm and aerobic fitness — the fitness benefits stand entirely on their own without any sparring.
  • Wide colour choice. Trivial, but a child who likes their gloves trains in them.

How to Use

Make a proper fist first — fingers curled fully, thumb outside and across the fingers, never tucked inside. Fasten the wrist strap firmly so the wrist cannot bend backwards, but not so tight that fingertips tingle. Start on focus mitts or a bag with straight punches, and teach that the punch lands on the two big knuckles with a straight wrist. Short rounds, plenty of rest. Safety, and please take this seriously: these are training mitts for pad and bag work, not certified competition sparring gloves, and they are not a substitute for coaching. An adult must supervise every session. Deliberate head contact should be avoided entirely with children — repeated impacts to a developing brain are a real risk, and no glove prevents that. If a child takes any knock to the head, they stop for the day. Check the padding for compression before each session; a flattened glove has stopped protecting.

Care & Maintenance

Sweat is what destroys gloves. Pull them out of the bag straight after training, open the cuffs and let them air dry fully — a sealed gym bag is a warm, wet incubator and the smell that results is permanent. Wipe the outside with a damp cloth, never soak or machine wash them, and never dry them on a radiator, which hardens both the padding and the outer material. Replace them when the padding has visibly compressed or feels hard through the knuckles.

Common questions

What ounce boxing gloves should I buy?
Ten to twelve ounces for bag and pad work, sixteen ounces for sparring. Heavier gloves protect your training partner as much as they protect you.
Do I need hand wraps under gloves?
Yes. Wraps support the wrist and the small bones of the hand, and they take the sweat that would otherwise rot the glove lining. Wrap in a figure-eight around the wrist and over the knuckles.
How do you fit a boil-and-bite mouthguard?
Follow the stated boil time exactly, then bite and suck the guard into place before cooling it in water. Over-boiling thins the material and gives a loose fit that protects far less.
