Kinesiology Tape 5m Roll – Elastic Sports Tape, Waterproof & Breathable

Price range: $10.99 through $24.99

A 5m roll of elastic kinesiology tape, waterproof and breathable, cut to length for knees, shoulders, calves and the lower back. The stretch is designed to move with skin rather than restrict a joint, which is why it stays on through showers and training. Apply to clean, dry, hair-free skin and rub it down for 20 seconds — the adhesive is heat-activated. Not a substitute for assessment of an injury.

What Kinesiology Tape Actually Does — And What It Definitely Does Not

Kinesiology tape is a thin, cotton-backed elastic strip with an acrylic adhesive that stretches with your skin instead of restricting it. The popular explanation — that it “lifts the skin to decompress tissue and increase lymphatic flow” — is not well supported by good evidence, and we are not going to sell it to you. What the research does fairly consistently show is a modest, short-term reduction in perceived pain, most plausibly because the tape provides continuous sensory feedback to skin mechanoreceptors, which changes how the nervous system weights pain and position signals from that area. That is a real effect. It is just a neurological one, not a structural one.

Key Benefits

  • Modest short-term pain relief. The most consistently reported finding in the literature. It is not dramatic, it does not last forever, and it is still worth having on a sore shoulder or a grumbling knee.
  • Constant proprioceptive feedback. The pull of the tape on your skin reminds you where the joint is throughout the movement, which many athletes find changes how they move a painful area — often for the better.
  • It does not restrict you. Unlike rigid athletic tape, kinesiology tape stretches roughly 30–40%, so full range of motion is preserved. You can tape a knee and still run on it.
  • Stays on for days, through showers and sweat. Water-resistant adhesive and a breathable cotton weave mean a well-applied strip typically lasts 3–5 days, so one application covers a whole training block.
  • Five widths, twelve colours. Narrow strips for fingers and wrists, wide strips for the back and quads. The colours do nothing physiologically — anyone who tells you different is guessing — but they cost nothing extra.
  • What it will NOT do. It does not realign joints, correct posture, “release” fascia, or heal an injury. It does not replace loading, strengthening and rehab, which are what actually fix things. Use it alongside those, not instead of them.

How to Use

Apply to clean, dry, oil-free skin — moisturiser is the number one reason tape falls off — and if the area is hairy, trim rather than shave, since freshly shaved skin irritates badly under adhesive. Round the corners of every strip you cut; square corners catch on clothing and peel. Anchor the first 2–3cm of tape with zero stretch, apply the middle section with light-to-moderate stretch (25–50% is plenty; more stretch means more skin pull and more irritation, not more effect), then lay the final anchor down with zero stretch as well. Rub the tape briskly for 20–30 seconds afterwards: the adhesive is heat-activated and will not bond properly if you skip this. Wait an hour before showering or training. Remove it slowly, in the direction of hair growth, ideally with the skin wet and warm. SAFETY: patch-test on your forearm for 24 hours if you have sensitive skin. Do not apply over broken skin, open wounds, rashes, sunburn or active infection. Do not tape over an area with a known or suspected blood clot (DVT), over a skin cancer or undiagnosed lesion, or over an area of active cellulitis. Remove it immediately if you develop itching, burning or a rash. If you have fragile skin, a skin condition, diabetes, lymphoedema or are pregnant, check with a clinician before taping.

Care & Maintenance

Store the roll sealed, flat and out of direct sunlight and heat; a hot car will ruin the adhesive. Do not scrub or pick at applied tape — pat it dry after showering rather than rubbing it with a towel. To remove, wet the tape and peel slowly along the direction of hair growth, pressing the skin down and away from the tape rather than yanking the tape up from the skin; a little oil or lotion under the edge speeds this up. Give the skin a rest day between applications on the same spot.
