Mulberry Silk Sleep Mask – Blackout Eye Mask for Travel & Deep Sleep

$34.99

A mulberry silk blackout sleep mask for travel, shift work and light sleepers. Blocking light is the cheapest and usually the most effective change you can make to sleep quality, and silk sits against the skin without the drag that synthetic fabric creates overnight. A contoured mask blocks more light at the nose than a flat one, and leaves room to blink.

Darkness Is a Hormone Signal, Not a Preference

Melatonin release is gated by light striking specialised cells in the retina, which report ambient brightness to the brain’s master clock. Even modest light through closed eyelids – a streetlamp, a standby LED, an early summer dawn – is enough to suppress that signal and fragment sleep, particularly in the last hours of the night when most REM sleep happens. A mask that seals properly removes the input entirely. That is the whole mechanism: no light, no suppression. It is unglamorous, and it works, which is more than can be said for most sleep products.

Key Benefits

  • It blocks the signal, not just the glare – a double-layer filled mask cuts the light reaching the eyelid rather than merely dimming it. Partial darkness is not darkness as far as your circadian clock is concerned.
  • Silk is smooth, and at the face that matters – mulberry silk has a lower friction coefficient than cotton, so it drags less on the delicate skin around the eyes and does not leave the creased pillow-face a rough mask does.
  • Breathable and temperature-neutral – silk wicks and does not trap heat the way a synthetic-filled mask does, which counts if you sleep warm or use it on a plane.
  • Genuinely useful for shift work and travel – if you have to sleep while the sun is up, blocking light is not a nicety, it is the entire problem.
  • No pressure on the eyeballs – the filled contour rests on the brow and cheekbone rather than pressing the lids, so your eyes can move freely in REM without the mask fighting them.
  • What it will not do – a mask does not fix insomnia, anxiety, caffeine too late in the day, or a bedroom that is too warm. It removes one variable, cleanly. It is not a cure for poor sleep.

How to Use

Put the mask on last, once you are already lying down and settled, so that it seats where your head will actually rest. Adjust the elastic so it is snug enough that no light leaks at the bridge of the nose, because that gap is where light almost always gets in – but loose enough that you can slide a finger under the strap. A strap tight enough to leave a mark will disturb your sleep more than the light did, and can give you a headache. Position the filled edges on the brow bone and the cheekbone, not on the eyelids. If you are using it on a plane, pair it with earplugs, since light and noise are separate problems. Safety and comfort: take contact lenses out before sleeping. If you use eye drops or ointment, let them absorb before putting the mask on, as fabric against a medicated eye can irritate. And do not wear a sleep mask on a night when you need to wake and orient quickly.

Care & Maintenance

Hand wash in cool water with a pH-neutral or silk-specific detergent. Do not use biological detergent or anything containing enzymes or bleach: enzymes digest protein fibres, and silk is a protein fibre, so they will destroy it. Do not wring it. Press the water out gently in a towel and dry it flat, away from direct heat and sunlight, both of which yellow and weaken silk. Iron on the lowest setting through a cloth, or not at all. Wash it regularly – it sits against your face every night and it collects skin oil.

What’s in the Box

Common questions

How long should you use an eye mask or eye massager?
Ten to fifteen minutes. The skin around the eye is the thinnest on the body, so both heat and cold reach it quickly.
Who should not use an eye massager?
Anyone with glaucoma, a retinal condition, recent eye surgery, or an eye infection should avoid pressure and heat around the eyes without their ophthalmologist agreeing first.
Does cold help under-eye puffiness?
Cold constricts blood vessels and reduces morning puffiness for a few hours. It is a temporary effect rather than a change to the skin, and rolling outward with light pressure avoids bruising.
