Glove Weight, Hand Wraps, and What Padding Actually Protects
There’s a persistent misconception that a boxing glove protects your hand. It mostly doesn’t — the foam spreads impact force across a larger area and over a longer time, which reduces peak pressure on your knuckles and, crucially, on your partner’s head. What it does not do is stabilise the twenty-seven bones of your hand or support the wrist. That job belongs to hand wraps, which is why every boxing gym in the world insists on them. Maya Hide is an engineered leather alternative that offers durability close to real leather with more consistent quality and easier upkeep — which is why it’s become the default for training gloves.
Key Benefits
- Maya Hide construction — engineered leather that resists cracking and abrasion far better than cheap PU, at a fraction of the upkeep of full-grain leather.
- Layered foam padding — spreads impact over a longer contact time, protecting your knuckles and your sparring partner’s head.
- Two weights for two jobs — 16oz for sparring, where more padding protects your partner; 10oz for bag and pad work, where you want feedback and speed.
- Multi-discipline fit — boxing, Muay Thai, MMA striking, kickboxing, pads and heavy bag.
- Secure wrist closure — a firm strap keeps the fist and forearm aligned so force travels through the wrist instead of bending it.
- Ventilated palm — helps release heat and moisture, which is the main driver of how fast a glove starts to smell.
How to Use
Wrap your hands. Every session, no exceptions — the wrap supports the wrist and compresses the metacarpals into a single unit, and gloves without wraps are how boxer’s fractures happen. Choose weight by purpose: 16oz for sparring (heavier padding protects the person you are hitting), 10oz for bag work and pads. Make a fist and check that your knuckles sit on the padded striking surface, not against the seam, and that the wrist strap is firm enough that the glove doesn’t rotate on your hand. Land on the front two knuckles with a straight, aligned wrist. Never spar without a mouthguard and appropriate headgear, never spar without supervision if you’re new, and don’t hit a heavy bag with bare or unwrapped hands. If you’re getting persistent wrist or knuckle pain, stop and get it assessed — hand injuries in striking sports compound quickly.

Care & Maintenance
Take the gloves out of your bag the moment you finish — a sealed gym bag is a bacterial incubator, and this is the single biggest reason gloves start to stink. Wipe the interior with an antibacterial wipe, then dry them palm-up with the cuff open, away from direct heat and sunlight, which crack and shrink the leather. Glove deodorisers or dryers help. Never machine wash or submerge them, and never dry them on a radiator.
