What Compression Sleeves Do — and What They Don’t
Compression works by applying external pressure to a limb. That pressure narrows the veins, which raises the velocity of blood returning to the heart — a real, measurable haemodynamic effect, and the reason medical compression exists at all. A tight sleeve also damps the high-frequency oscillation of soft tissue on impact and floods the skin with mechanical input, which sharpens proprioceptive feedback around the elbow. That is the origin of the ‘supported’ feeling people describe. The cooling effect works differently again: an ‘ice sleeve’ does not refrigerate anything. It wicks sweat to the fabric surface, where it evaporates and carries heat away with it — and the tight knit blocks a substantial share of UV while it does so.
Key Benefits
- Real UV protection. A dense knit over the forearm is more reliable than sunscreen you forgot to reapply, and it does not sweat off. This is the strongest reason to own a pair.
- Evaporative cooling. Sweat is moved to the outer surface where it can evaporate, which is how the ‘ice’ effect actually works — you feel cooler because heat is leaving.
- A supported feel around the elbow. The proprioceptive input is real, even though the mechanical support is modest. Many people find it steadies the joint through repetitive work.
- Increased venous return. The one physiological effect of compression that is well established.
- Abrasion protection. A layer between your forearm and gravel, gym knurling, a bike, or a rope.
- Lower perceived soreness. Consistently reported, and worth having, even though objective recovery markers barely shift. See below.
How to Use
Roll the sleeve up the arm rather than dragging it — pulling hard on the cuff stretches out the elastane and shortens the sleeve’s life. Position it so the wider end sits on the upper arm and the sleeve covers the elbow completely without bunching in the crease. It should feel firm and even, never gripping in a band at one point. Honesty, and this is the whole point of this page: compression sleeves do not improve athletic performance. The research is weak and inconsistent, and there is no reliable evidence that they make you faster, stronger, or more enduring. They do not slim your arms, they do not burn anything, and ‘pressure’ is not a fat-loss mechanism. Perceived muscle soreness after hard exercise does tend to be somewhat lower when people wear compression, but the objective markers of recovery move very little. And a sleeve is not a brace: if you have an actual elbow injury — tennis elbow, a ligament problem, joint instability — a light compression sleeve is not a substitute for proper support and proper assessment. Buy these for sun protection, sweat management, abrasion resistance and a supported feel. Those are real, and they are enough. Safety: do not use compression garments if you have peripheral arterial disease, a known deep vein thrombosis, or any diagnosed circulatory disorder, without medical advice. If you get numbness, tingling, or a change in skin colour in the hand, take them off immediately — that is too much pressure, not ‘working’.

Care & Maintenance
Hand wash cold and air dry flat. Do not use fabric softener — it coats and destroys elastane, and a sleeve that has lost its elastic recovery has lost the only thing it does. Never tumble dry, iron or bleach. Wash after every use; the compression fit means the fabric holds sweat against the skin, and bacteria are the reason a sleeve starts to smell permanently after a few months of neglect.
