Padding and Support: The Real Trade-Off Behind Grip Pads
Two separate problems get solved here. The first is pressure: a knurled bar concentrates load into a narrow line across the base of your fingers, which is precisely where calluses build, tear and end training weeks. A pad spreads that load over a wider area of the palm. The second is wrist position: under a heavy press or an overhead hold, the loaded wrist wants to fold into extension, moving the bar behind the line of the forearm and turning a stack of bones into a lever. A wrap adds passive stiffness that keeps the wrist stacked. Different mechanisms, different problems, sold together.
Key Benefits
- Stops calluses tearing. A torn callus mid-block is a week of ruined pulling. The pad spreads bar pressure across the palm instead of concentrating it along the finger base.
- Wrist stays stacked under load. The integrated wrap resists the wrist extension that creeps in during heavy bench, overhead press and front rack holds, keeping the load over the forearm rather than behind it.
- Anti-slip, wear-resistant palm surface. Sweaty hands slipping on a knurled bar is a real failure mode. A textured pad grips when your skin no longer will.
- Less bulk than a full glove. Grip pads leave the fingers free, so you keep more bar feel and none of the sweaty, bunched-fabric problem that full gym gloves have.
- Fast on and off. Slip the pad over the fingers, wrap the wrist, done. No lacing, no fiddling between sets.
- The honest trade-off. Pads and wraps do not make your grip or wrists stronger — they reduce the demand on them. That is exactly what you want on a heavy pressing day, and exactly what you do not want if grip strength is a training goal. Use them on the sets that need them, and train barehanded on the ones that do not.
How to Use
Slide the pad over your fingers so it sits across the upper palm at the base of the fingers, which is where a bar actually rests — not in the middle of the hand. Take your grip on the bar, then wrap the wrist strap firmly enough that the wrist cannot fold backwards, but not so tight that your hand goes cold or tingles. Loosen the wraps between sets: they are meant to be tight under load, not worn tight for an hour. Wraps belong on your heavy pressing, overhead and holding work — they are largely pointless on light accessory sets, and a wrist that has never had to stabilise anything will not be a strong one. SAFETY: a wrist wrap supports a healthy wrist; it does not rehabilitate an injured one. If your wrist hurts, find out why rather than strapping over it. Do not wear the wraps so tight that circulation is restricted, and note that pads slightly increase effective bar diameter, which can make very heavy deadlifts feel less secure — many lifters prefer chalk or straps for that specific lift.

Care & Maintenance
Sweat is the enemy here — it degrades both the padding and the adhesion of the wrap fastening. Air them out after every session rather than sealing them in a gym bag, which is how gym gloves get their reputation. Hand-wash in cool water with mild soap when they start to smell, rinse thoroughly, and air-dry away from direct heat; a radiator or tumble dryer will crack the palm material and destroy the elastic. Check the wrist strap fastening for wear and replace the pair once the wrap no longer holds tension, since a slack wrap gives you the confidence of support without the support.
