Is the listed weight per item or per pair?

Brands advertise this inconsistently, so check the specification before ordering. Where a listing says "set" it usually means a pair, and where it gives a single figure it usually means one piece.

What kettlebell weight should a beginner start with?

Most beginners swing an 8-12 kg bell and press something lighter. A bell light enough to press comfortably is often too light to swing well, which is why two weights beat one.

Should I run in ankle weights?

No. They change your gait and add load at the end of a long lever, which stresses the knee. Use them for walking and floor work instead.

Rubber bumper plates are Olympic weight plates designed to be dropped from height without damaging floors. They have a 2-inch steel insert in dense rubber, matched in diameter across weights so the bar sits level. Bumper plates matter for Olympic lifting where the bar is dropped; for pressing and rowing, cast iron plates cost less.
