The £20 Part That Stops a Loaded Barbell Turning Into an Incident
An unclamped barbell is a lever with sliding masses on it. The moment the bar tips even slightly — and it always does, because no lift is perfectly symmetrical — plates migrate outward on the low side. That shifts the centre of mass, which tips the bar further, which moves more plates. It’s a positive feedback loop, and it happens fastest during the eccentric of a bench press or the turnaround of a clean. A spin lock collar removes the variable entirely by mechanically threading against the sleeve, so the plate stack simply cannot travel.
Key Benefits
- Threaded lock, not friction. Spring clips rely on friction and can walk loose under repeated bar vibration. A spin lock threads down and stays where you put it.
- Tool-free, fast enough to use between sets. Collars only work if you actually bother to fit them. These spin on and off by hand in a couple of seconds, which is the difference between a safety feature and a safety feature you skip.
- Protects your bench and your floor. Most home-gym plate damage comes from plates sliding off a tipped bar. Collars are considerably cheaper than a replacement plate or a cracked tile.
- Keeps loading symmetrical for cleaner technique. If plates can’t drift, both hands feel the same load throughout the set — useful when you’re trying to diagnose a genuine strength imbalance rather than an equipment one.
- Sold as a matched pair. One collar is not a solution. These come as two, which is the only quantity that makes sense.
- Fits 25mm standard bars. Check your bar sleeve before ordering — these are for standard 25mm bars, not Olympic 50mm sleeves.
How to Use
Load your plates, slide them flush against the inner collar, then thread the spin lock down the sleeve until it seats firmly against the outermost plate. Hand-tight is correct; you are not trying to crush the plate stack, just eliminate travel. Give the bar a light shake before you unrack — if you hear plates rattle, tighten a quarter turn more. Repeat on the second side and check both are seated before every working set, not just the first one. Safety: collars prevent plates sliding, they do not prevent a failed lift. Use safety pins or a spotter for anything you might not complete. And do not use these on an Olympic 50mm bar — they will not thread and will give a false sense of security.

Care & Maintenance
Wipe down after use — sweat on threads is what turns a smooth collar into a seized one. If the thread starts to feel gritty, clean it and add a trace of light machine oil. Store the pair together and off the floor; a lost collar means an unclamped bar, which defeats the purpose entirely.
