Price range: $512.99 through $835.99

A set of seven crystal singing bowls tuned to the chakra scale, supplied with carry cases and strikers. Used for sound baths, meditation and relaxation practice. Sound as a Focus Object: What a Bowl Session Really Does

We will be straight with you: singing bowls do not tune chakras, correct energy fields or heal disease, and there is no measurable physiology behind those claims. What they do is real, and more interesting than the mythology. A struck quartz bowl produces a sustained tone with a long, slowly decaying tail and rich overtones — an unusually good object for attention to rest on, which is the core mechanic of every focused-attention meditation practice ever studied. Slow, predictable sound also entrains breathing: people naturally lengthen the exhale to match the decay, and a longer exhale increases vagal tone and shifts the autonomic balance toward parasympathetic. Small controlled studies of sound meditation find meaningful reductions in self-reported tension, anxiety and low mood afterwards. That is a modest, honest, worthwhile claim.

Key Benefits

  • An anchor for a restless mind. People who cannot meditate on the breath often can meditate on a tone. The sustained note gives attention something concrete to return to, which is the entire skill.
  • Breath entrainment happens by itself. Following a long decay naturally lengthens the exhale, and a longer exhale than inhale is one of the few reliably parasympathetic things you can do on demand.
  • Evidence for stress, not for cure. Sound-meditation studies show reduced self-reported anxiety and tension. They do not show effects on physical disease, and neither do we.
  • Full octave across seven bowls. The set spans the traditional root-to-crown mapping, which gives you a genuine tonal range to work with rather than one note repeated.
  • Quartz sustains longer than metal. Crystal bowls hold a tone far longer than a brass bowl, which is exactly what makes them useful as a meditation object.
  • Robust carry cases included. Quartz is brittle and chips at the rim. Two padded cases are what make the set usable rather than ornamental.

How to Use

Set the bowls on their rubber O-rings on a firm, flat surface — never directly on hard stone or tile, which is where chips happen. To strike, tap the outer wall gently with the padded mallet; to sing, hold the mallet like a pen and run the suede side around the outer rim with steady, even pressure and moderate speed until the tone builds. Do not force it — pressing harder produces a harsh, gritty sound and risks cracking the bowl. Sit or lie down, close your eyes and let attention rest on the tone until it fades completely, then strike again. Ten to twenty minutes is plenty. Two practical safety notes. Do not put your ear near the rim of a large bowl while playing it: sustained close-range tones are loud enough to be genuinely unpleasant and are not something to expose an ear to for a long session. And if you have epilepsy or a condition affected by sustained loud sound, or you are unwell in a way that warrants medical care, treat this as relaxation practice and nothing more — it is not a substitute for treatment.

Care & Maintenance

Quartz is hard but brittle: it will survive being played daily for years and will not survive one knock against a tiled floor. Always rest bowls on their O-rings, never stack them, and transport them in the cases. Clean with a soft, lint-free cloth and a little water — no abrasive cleaners, no scouring pads, nothing that scratches the surface, since surface damage dulls the tone. Keep mallets dry; a damp suede sleeve will not grip the rim and will squeal. Store away from radiators and out of the reach of children and pets.
