Blisters Are a Friction Problem, and Split-Toe Socks Attack the Friction
A blister is a mechanical failure, not a burn. Repeated shear force between the layers of the epidermis eventually separates them, and fluid fills the gap. Two things make that separation easier: heat and moisture, which soften the skin and raise its coefficient of friction. So there are only two useful levers. The split-toe (tabi) construction separates the big toe from the rest, so toes shear against fabric instead of against each other — the classic marathon blister site. And CoolMax’s multi-channel polyester fibre has far more surface area than round fibre, moving sweat outward to evaporate instead of letting it saturate the sock.
Key Benefits
- Split-toe design removes toe-on-toe shear. The blister between the big toe and second toe is caused by the toes rubbing each other. A layer of fabric between them removes the mechanism.
- CoolMax fibre moves sweat, it doesn’t store it. Multi-channel polyester wicks moisture to the sock’s outer surface where it can evaporate — the opposite of cotton, which holds it against the skin.
- Dries fast enough to matter mid-run. Quick-dry means a wet crossing or a sweat-through doesn’t leave you squelching for the next hour.
- Breathable knit through the instep. Foot temperature drives sweat rate; ventilating the top of the foot reduces the moisture you have to manage in the first place.
- Works for cycling and gym too. Anywhere your foot is repeatedly loaded inside a warm shoe for a long time, the same physics applies.
- Honest caveat: no sock is blister-proof. Shoe fit, lacing and toenail length are just as important, and a sock cannot rescue a shoe that is half a size too small.
How to Use
Sizing matters more here than in a normal sock. Seat the big toe fully into its own compartment before pulling the rest of the sock on — a split-toe sock worn with the toe half-seated will produce exactly the blister it was designed to prevent, because the fabric bunches at the web space. Pull the sock smooth with no wrinkles across the ball of the foot, and check there is no fold under the arch. Do not layer a cotton liner underneath; it will hold moisture and undo the wicking. For a marathon, wear them on at least two long training runs first — race day is not the day to discover a new seam. Replace them when the cuff stops gripping or the sole knit goes thin and shiny, because a sock that slides is a sock that shears.

Care & Maintenance
Machine wash cool, inside out, and skip the fabric softener — it coats synthetic fibre and destroys wicking, which is the entire reason you bought CoolMax. Air dry rather than tumble; high heat degrades elastane and is what turns a snug sock into a sliding one. Wash after every run: bacteria in a re-worn sock is how a hot spot becomes an infected blister.
