Rest the Thumb Joint You Can’t Stop Using
Pain at the base of the thumb and along the radial wrist — De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, texting thumb, early CMC arthritis — is an overuse problem. The tendons that abduct and extend the thumb glide through a narrow sheath at the wrist; repeated gripping, lifting and scrolling inflames that sheath, and the swelling itself makes the tendons rub harder. A thumb spica brace works by mechanical rest: it holds the thumb in slight abduction and the wrist near neutral, so the tendons stop sliding under load and the sheath is given a chance to calm down.
Key Benefits
- Immobilises the thumb, not just the wrist — an integrated thumb post holds the CMC and MCP joints still, which a plain wrist wrap cannot do.
- Adjustable compression via hook-and-loop straps — tighten enough to restrict painful motion, loose enough that fingers stay pink and warm.
- Breathable fabric with an open palm — you keep your grip and finger dexterity, so it can be worn while typing or driving.
- Useful for post-sprain and post-cast periods — a step-down from rigid casting when a clinician has cleared you to start moving again.
- Fits either hand in most configurations — check the variant listing; some are handed, some are ambidextrous.
- Low-profile enough for overnight wear — night-time is when many people unconsciously flex the wrist and wake up worse.
How to Use
Slide the thumb through the loop and seat the brace so the thumb post runs along the side of the thumb, not across the web space. Fasten the wrist strap first, then the thumb strap, then any forearm strap. It should feel firmly supportive, never tight — if your thumb tingles, goes pale, or throbs, it is too tight. Wear it during aggravating activity and at night for the first one to two weeks, then start weaning as pain settles. Important: a brace rests a tendon, it does not strengthen one. Continuous long-term wear can leave the thumb and wrist weaker and stiffer, so pair it with gentle range-of-motion and grip work as symptoms allow. If pain, numbness or weakness persists beyond two to three weeks, or you had a fall or obvious injury, see a clinician — a scaphoid fracture can masquerade as a thumb sprain.

Care & Maintenance
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, press out excess water and air dry flat away from direct heat. Do not tumble dry or iron — heat degrades the elastic and the hook-and-loop closure. Close the straps before washing so they do not snag. Replace the brace when the straps no longer hold tension.
